Maine's Public Universities - University of Maine System

Life the way it should be

Research and Economic Development

All of Maine’s public universities are engaged in research and economic development.  Those functions cover a very broad range of scholarly and outreach and involve virtually all faculty members as well as a large number of graduate and undergraduate students.

  • Research and economic development results from work in many disciplines, including:
  • Science and engineering, through which new products and technologies can be developed and marketed
  • the arts and humanities, in which creative thought and expression enriches our society and, in very tangible ways, helps fuel Maine’s “creative economy” – one of the State’s fastest growing economic sectors
  • business, education, healthcare, social work, and other professional fields on which our communities and state rely for services
